Dodge City A’s vs Great Bend Bat Cats 7-25-18

The Great Bend Bat Cats held their final game of the season on July 25th by hosting the Dodge City A’s.

With it being the final game, the team recognized the local families that opened up their homes to host a player or players for the summer.

After thanking the families, it was time to play some baseball.

Both teams went 1-2-3 in their respective halves of the first inning. Then Dodge City exploded for seven runs in the second inning. The A’s added two more runs in the third inning.

Great Bend threatened to put a run on the board in the bottom of the third, but the Dodge City catcher tagged the runner out at home plate.

Early in the bottom of the fourth inning lighting crackled across the sky and caused the game to be delayed. After consulting weather radar and seeing several more lightning bolts flashing near the field, the coaches decided to call the game.

This ended the season for both teams.

Head Coach Rodger Ward took his players aside and talked to them for one last time this summer. He then shook hands and hugged each player before everyone gathered for a final team picture.

The season did not go as hoped at the start. All of the players could not hide the pride they had in being a Great Bend Bat Cat and for the friendships they made this summer.

Dodge City Softball vs Great Bend 4-18-17

For once the sun shined and the fields were dry as the Dodge City Lady Demons traveled to Great Bend to face the Lady Panthers.

Great Bend took the first game of the double-header 8 to 1. In the second game, the Lady Panthers got the bats hot early tallying four runs and batting around the order in the First Inning.

Dodge City would add back some runs, but Great Bend never gave up the lead and ended the game in the Bottom of the Sixth Inning by run rule with a final score of 15 to 5.

Kansas Girls High School Wrestling Championship

For many years, if a high school girl wanted to wrestle, she was left with boys as her competition. This year, 37 schools traveled to McPherson to take part in the first ever Kansas Girls High School Wrestling Championship.

The goal of the day was to spread the word that Girls Wrestling is happening in Kansas.

For many of the competitors, this might have been one of the few times they faced another girl on the mat instead of a boy. All of the participants gave it their all and competed at the highest level they could.

Many of the girls there knew they were apart of history. While the Kansas High School Activities Association did not sanction the event, the organizers used official referees and followed every rule.

The organizers hope that by this time next year, several more schools will field not on a full boys wrestling squad, but a girls too.

Dodge City Football versus Great Bend 9-23-16

Week Four of the Football season saw two teams from the same league lock up in battle. The Dodge City Demons came into Great Bend with memories of their victory over the Panthers last year.

The Panthers entered the night undefeated and wanting to defend their turf on Homecoming night.

After both trading scoreless possessions, Great Bend jumped on the board first with a touchdown. Then began a back and forth series of quick scores that ended with the Demons on top going to the locker room for Halftime.

The Demons would add another score early in the Third Quarter to go up by ten points. Then the Panthers roared back scoring three unanswered touchdowns to regain the lead. Dodge City would add one more score, but Great Bend held on to win 34 to 27.
