For many years, if a high school girl wanted to wrestle, she was left with boys as her competition. This year, 37 schools traveled to McPherson to take part in the first ever Kansas Girls High School Wrestling Championship.
The goal of the day was to spread the word that Girls Wrestling is happening in Kansas.
For many of the competitors, this might have been one of the few times they faced another girl on the mat instead of a boy. All of the participants gave it their all and competed at the highest level they could.
Many of the girls there knew they were apart of history. While the Kansas High School Activities Association did not sanction the event, the organizers used official referees and followed every rule.
The organizers hope that by this time next year, several more schools will field not on a full boys wrestling squad, but a girls too.
