Dodge City A’s vs Great Bend Bat Cats 7-25-18

The Great Bend Bat Cats held their final game of the season on July 25th by hosting the Dodge City A’s.

With it being the final game, the team recognized the local families that opened up their homes to host a player or players for the summer.

After thanking the families, it was time to play some baseball.

Both teams went 1-2-3 in their respective halves of the first inning. Then Dodge City exploded for seven runs in the second inning. The A’s added two more runs in the third inning.

Great Bend threatened to put a run on the board in the bottom of the third, but the Dodge City catcher tagged the runner out at home plate.

Early in the bottom of the fourth inning lighting crackled across the sky and caused the game to be delayed. After consulting weather radar and seeing several more lightning bolts flashing near the field, the coaches decided to call the game.

This ended the season for both teams.

Head Coach Rodger Ward took his players aside and talked to them for one last time this summer. He then shook hands and hugged each player before everyone gathered for a final team picture.

The season did not go as hoped at the start. All of the players could not hide the pride they had in being a Great Bend Bat Cat and for the friendships they made this summer.

American Legion AAA Zone 8 Championship McPherson vs Great Bend 7-15-17

The math for the first day of a zone tournament is fairly simple, win twice and you go on to the state tournament. Getting to those two victories can me a winding road.

Both the McPherson Seniors and Great Bend Chiefs advanced to this game. Each team knew that their pitching depth was going to be challenged.

A pitcher cannot pitch more than 120 pitches in a day and then must rest a minimum of two days.

McPherson sent two pitchers up to the mound, Great Bend used a total of five over seven innings.

The Seniors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The Chiefs pulled back two in the bottom half of the inning and in the next inning.

Both teams continued to tack on runs and keep with in contact of each other. Going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Great Bend needed one run to tie and send the game into extra innings. Instead they got two on the same play, a single by Payton Mauler to win the game.

The Great Bend Chiefs now will play in the State Tournament in Ottawa. McPherson still has a chance to reach State, they have to win one more game tomorrow.

A humid morning turned into a hotter afternoon as the Great Bend Chiefs and the Hays Eagles squared off in the American Legion Baseball AAA Zone Tournament. This game would decide the team to face McPherson for a berth to the State Tournament.

Both teams sent players to the plate, but none of them could get the man around the horn to reach home until the sixth inning. In that late frame, Great Bend put up three runs that sealed the victory for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs’ players would only have a short time to rest before they faced the McPherson Seniors in about 30 minutes.
