Rivalries give football games added flavor. Two teams that square off with each other so often that the meetings take on special meaning. The Hays Indians traveled to face the Great Bend Panthers on the gridiron for the 81st time on September 7th.

The game started with a back and forth defensive battle. Both teams faced a second down and 22 yards to go on their opening possessions.

Late in the first half, Great Bend intercepted a pass from the Hays quarterback and on the ensuing possession, scored the first touchdown of the game. The Panthers failed to make the point after touchdown kick. A couple of minutes later, Hays used a busted pass play to get on the board themselves and take a 7 to 6 lead into halftime.

Great Bend added another touchdown and a field goal to clinch the victory with a score of 15 to 7.

Great Bend Cross Country Invitational 8-30-18

The first week of high school competition saw teams of runners head to the Lake Barton course for the Great Bend Cross Country Invitational.

Due to a hot and humid late August day, the race director decided to shorten the length from the normal 5K to a 4K (2.49 miles). This decision came out of a concern for the safety of the runners.

Great Bend’s Mayra Ramirez won the girls varsity race with a time of 17:01.9. Great Bend also took first in the team competition over Salina South with a team score of 47 to 55.

In the boys varsity race, Salina South’s Keetan Munsell won with a blistering time of 13:28.7. The next closest time was Great Bend’s Ryan Nicholson with 14:05.5. Great Bend took first in the team competition with 23 points versus Garden City’s second place with 46.

American Legion AAA Zone Tournament Hays vs Great Bend 7-15-17

A humid morning turned into a hotter afternoon as the Great Bend Chiefs and the Hays Eagles squared off in the American Legion Baseball AAA Zone Tournament. This game would decide the team to face McPherson for a berth to the State Tournament.

Both teams sent players to the plate, but none of them could get the man around the horn to reach home until the sixth inning. In that late frame, Great Bend put up three runs that sealed the victory for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs’ players would only have a short time to rest before they faced the McPherson Seniors in about 30 minutes.

A strong rival makes for a great high school environment. The Great Bend Panthers welcomed their long rivals, the Hays Indians into their court for the first home game of the new year.

The first quarter started as a back and forth game. Soon, Hays’ strong outside shooting took over and extended the lead to more than ten points. Great Bend tried to narrow the gap, but failed to find the shooting to claw back. The Hays Indians finished the night with a score of 51 to 37.
