Rivalries give football games added flavor. Two teams that square off with each other so often that the meetings take on special meaning. The Hays Indians traveled to face the Great Bend Panthers on the gridiron for the 81st time on September 7th.
The game started with a back and forth defensive battle. Both teams faced a second down and 22 yards to go on their opening possessions.
Late in the first half, Great Bend intercepted a pass from the Hays quarterback and on the ensuing possession, scored the first touchdown of the game. The Panthers failed to make the point after touchdown kick. A couple of minutes later, Hays used a busted pass play to get on the board themselves and take a 7 to 6 lead into halftime.
Great Bend added another touchdown and a field goal to clinch the victory with a score of 15 to 7.

Leaving on a few days between sports, I jumped into shooting basketball with a trip to Ellis County for the opening round of the 2014 Hays City Shoot-Out. I arrived right as the horn sounded for Halftime of the Olathe North versus Newton Boys game. Olathe North held a sizable lead. Newton challenged a few…
The First Day of the Girls Bracket for the 2014 Hoisington Cardinal Winter Jam saw a matchup of the Russell Lady Broncos and the Ellsworth Lady Bearcats. Russell jumped out to an early lead. Ellsworth worked hard to claw back to as close as they could. They got as close as two points in the…

When the practice started, the sun remained below the horizon. As the sun inched farther up the sky, the players worked up a sweat with drills for conditioning and…
The final First Round game pitted the hosting Great Bend Braves versus the team from Doniphan County. The Braves jumped out to a 10 run lead in the First Inning. They let Doniphan County score a few runs, but never let them get close enough to threaten the large lead. Great Bend won 14 to…
I went out to Quivira National Wildlife Refuge on the morning of December 12 and saw some deer and birds enjoying the cold, cold day. Here are some pics from then: [flickr-gallery mode=”photoset” photoset=”72157625662528215″]
