Great Bend Girls Swimming Invitational 4-26-19

Nine teams of swimmers went to the pool in the Kirkman Center on the campus of Barton Community College for the Great Bend Girls Swimming Invitational.

Manhattan dominated the meet winning seven of the twelve events and taking first as a team. Newton took first in the other five events but finished third in the team competition twelve points behind host Great Bend.

Below are some of the pictures I took at the meet:

Kansas Girls High School Wrestling Championship

For many years, if a high school girl wanted to wrestle, she was left with boys as her competition. This year, 37 schools traveled to McPherson to take part in the first ever Kansas Girls High School Wrestling Championship.

The goal of the day was to spread the word that Girls Wrestling is happening in Kansas.

For many of the competitors, this might have been one of the few times they faced another girl on the mat instead of a boy. All of the participants gave it their all and competed at the highest level they could.

Many of the girls there knew they were apart of history. While the Kansas High School Activities Association did not sanction the event, the organizers used official referees and followed every rule.

The organizers hope that by this time next year, several more schools will field not on a full boys wrestling squad, but a girls too.

2014 Hays City Shoot-Out 1st Round Olathe North vs Newton 12-4-14

Leaving on a few days between sports, I jumped into shooting basketball with a trip to Ellis County for the opening round of the 2014 Hays City Shoot-Out.

I arrived right as the horn sounded for Halftime of the Olathe North versus Newton Boys game. Olathe North held a sizable lead. Newton challenged a few times, but never could close the gap. Olathe North won with a score of 46 to 34.

Newton at McPherson

The Newton Railers traveled north to McPherson to face the Bullpups in a winner goes to the playoffs game.

The Railers ended the first quarter with a 14-12 lead. Then in the second quarter they gave up that lead as McPherson piled on the points to make it 35-14 going into the locker room at Halftime. The Bullpups made it into a 49-21 final score.

McPherson will travel to Kapaun-Mount Carmel next Friday.
