Stafford Football versus Otis-Bison 9-14-18

The third week of the football season saw an undefeated Stafford Trojans travel to face the Otis-Bison Cougars. The Cougars entered the game with a 500 record of 1 and 1.

Homecoming festivities kicked the night off. After the crowning, both teams took to the field for the game.

The game started slowly, but Otis-Bison then took over after eight minutes of gameplay. The Cougars would go on to lead 38 to 0 at halftime. Stafford managed to lengthen out the game to a couple of minutes into the fourth quarter before Otis-Bison ended the contest with a score of 50 to 0.

Victoria Football vs Central Plains 9-2-17

Twenty-five hours to complete a game? That happens when Mother Nature decides to provide a light show during a game, in this case the Eight Man matchup between the Victoria Knights and the Central Plains Oilers.

The game kicked off at 7:00 PM on Friday evening but at the 6:15 mark in the second quarter, lighting struck close enough to the field to cause a delay. As more bolts flew through the sky, the coaches and officials decided to postpone restarting the game to 6:00 PM on Saturday.

At the appointed time, both teams came out and went through pre-game rituals and then lined up and restarted the game just like it was the previous evening with the ball near mid field and zero to zero showing on the scoreboard.

The Victoria Knights only took of two minutes from the clock before scoring the first points of the matchup. They took a 12 to 0 lead into the locker room for halftime.

The second half went similarly as the Knights piled on the points. Central Plains scored late in the game to prevent a shutout but fell to Victoria by a score of 34 to 8.

The final whistle for the game sounded at 7:55 PM Saturday evening. Almost 25 hours from when the game first kicked off.

Greeley County Football vs Otis-Bison 10-7-16

For Eight Man football, this is their second week in District play. The Greeley County Jackrabbits traveled to face the Otis-Bison Cougars.

The Jackrabbits won the coin toss and took the ball. The Otis-Bison Defense quickly asserted itself and combined with a potent, multi-threat Offense, the Cougars won 62 to 6.

Spearville vs Hodgeman County 10-24-14

Week Eight of the Football season saw District Matchup with two long time foes as the Spearville Lancers traveled to Jetmore to face the Hodgeman County Longhorns.

Both teams came into the game undefeated. Spearville jumped out to an early three touchdown lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Hodgeman County woke up and put some points on the board. The second half was a back and forth affair, but Hodgeman County could not erase the edge that the Lancers gained early in the game.

Spearville won the game by a score of 50 to 28.

Spearville Football vs Ness City 10-3-14

Week Five of the football season saw the first District matchup for most teams. I went to the Eight Man Division I District 7 game featuring the Spearville Lancers versus the Ness City Eagles.

Spearville came in undefeated and Ness City had just recorded their first loss of the year the previous week. The Lancers jumped out to a quick two score lead and end the end, that advantage was the difference on the night. Ness City would respond with touchdowns of their own, but could not overcome the early lead they had spotted, falling 50 to 38.

Kinsley vs Otis-Bison Football 9-26-14

Week Four of High School Football saw a score occur that no one expected. Otis-Bison hosted their Homecomming Game by matching up with Central Prairie League rival the Kinsley Coyotes in an Eight Man Football game.

Over the years, Eight Man football has put up some large scores in part to having three fewer players on the field per side and twenty less yards. The amount of scoring led the Kansas High School Activities Association to start a 45 point Mercy Rule over 20 years ago. (Meaning if a team gets out to a lead of at least 45 points after playing one full half, the game would be over at that point.) In recent years, some teams have really opened up play with Spread style offenses and other more exotic ways of generating yards and points.

This was an old-fashioned Eight Man game with two running backs running all over the field. Otis-Bison’s Brad Lightfoot and Kinsley’s Tyler Espinosa literally lit up the score board. Lightfoot ended the night with 10 touchdowns and 415 all-purpose yards.

If one team scored, the other would respond. Otis-Bison was able to build a lead and hold on to it through out the game after the first quarter. Kinsley would punch back with a score, many times thanks to Espinosa’s ability to run and evade, and keep things close enough where the Mercy Rule would not come into play.

The final score, which set a new State record for combined scoring in an Eight Man game, was Otis-Bison 104 Kinsley 70. (Kinda beats the 3-0 game I went to last week.)
