Stubble Fire in Great Bend 7-4-13

On the Fourth of July, many people spend the day shooting off various fireworks. Some times those fireworks do more than just explode and make a loud sound.

This year, I happened to be driving after dumping some grass at the city compost pile and noticed some smoke in the distance. As I drove closer, it became clear quickly that this was no small fire.

What looked like for a moment as a building fully engulfed, instead was a dry wheat stubble field that had caught fire from some fireworks. I pulled off to a side street and grabbed my camera. By the time I was ready to shoot a picture, the City of Great Bend Fire Department had much of the fire extinguished.

Other Fire Departments in the county responded to fireworks sparked grass fires on the Fourth also as the winds that day caused embers to travel farther than intended.
