4A Division II State Championship Hayden vs Pratt 11-26-16

For every Elven Man team in Kansas, they desire to play on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Playing on this day means they made it to the State Championship game.

This year, the Class 4A Division II Championship pitted the Hayden Wildcats of Topeka against the Pratt Greenbacks.

Hayden entered the game with an 8-4 record, but most of those losses came to teams in higher classifications. Pratt only recorded one loss on their way to the game, and that was from a very highly ranked Hoisington team.

The Wildcats won the coin toss and received the ball. Pratt’s defense immediately asserted their dominance and forced a three-and-out. Then the offense took over and scored their first touchdown easily.

Hayden would score two touchdowns on the day, but those could not compare to the onslaught from the Greenbacks. Pratt went on to win the game, and the State Championship, with a score of 48 to 14.

5A Sub-State Goddard Football versus Great Bend 11-18-16

Tonight, only four teams in the State of Kansas in Class 5A stepped out onto a field of play. The Goddard Lions traveled to face the Great Bend Panthers for a chance to play for the State Championship.

The Lions struck quickly scoring on their first possession. They dominated the game from there on. When Great Bend managed to put points on the board, Goddard punched right back. By the end of the night, the scoreboard read 50 to 21 and the Lions gathered to celebrate their win and the opportunity to play for the State title.

Goddard faces off against Mill Valley next Saturday. Great Bend ends their season with a 10 and 2 record.

5A Sectional Valley Center Football vs Great Bend 11-11-16

With temperatures finally starting to feel like football weather, two teams squared off for a chance to play for a birth in the State Championship.

The Valley Center Hornets came into Great Bend looking to clinch their most successful season in school history. The Great Bend Panthers wanted to keep the winning and playing at home.

The Panthers put the first points on the board. Valley Center answered back with a touchdown and then a field goal. Another Hornet touchdown early in the second half put Great Bend down by ten points and their largest deficit of the year. A pair of touchdowns later and an interception sealed the 28 to 24 victory for the Panthers.

Great Bend will host Goddard in their first Sub-State game since 2006.

5A Regional Andover Football versus Great Bend 11-4-16

Ever feel like you saw the exact thing happening as if you were looking into a mirror? The two competitors in the Class 5A Regional game could definitely say that.

The Great Bend Panthers hosted the Andover Trojans and former GB coach Tony Crough. Coach Crough brought his spread style offense to the Butler County school. His replacement, Coach Erin Beck, kept the offense and some of the defensive schemes the same as last year.

Both teams knew much of what the other would do given this familiarity. This caused the game to be a tight back and forth affair.

Great Bend put points on the board first, but Andover added a touchdown to even up the score as the teams went in for Halftime.

The decisive play of the game was an errant high snap by the Trojans near the end zone. The ball rolled out of the back of the end zone to give the Panthers a Safety and two points. In the Fourth Quarter, Great Bend added another touchdown to make it a 16 to 7 final score.

Great Bend now prepares to face the Valley Center Hornets.

As calendars flip to a new month, a whole new season of Football begins. Now teams must win to keep playing.

Class 3A joins the two Eight Man divisions on starting their playoffs on Tuesday night. For the Hoisington Cardinals, they started their playoff hopes with a matchup against the Lakin Broncs.

Hoisington’s Defense established itself quickly and only surrendered one touchdown in the first half, and another in the second half. By the time Lakin tallied their final points, the Cardinals held firm to the control of the game finishing with a 56 to 13 score.

Hoisington now travels on Saturday to Norton for their next round of the 3A Football Playoffs.
