The Wichita Northwest Grizzlies traveled to Great Bend to take on the Panthers.
Northwest had been known for putting up a ton of points in their first two games. Great Bend managed to hold them to 31 points.
The defense of the Grizzlies held Great Bend to zero points on the night. Three times the Panthers either fumbled or turned the ball over on downs within the red zone.

The Andover Trojans traveled to Great Bend for an exciting start to the 2019 football season.
Some games are decided long before they end. Some games take longer for one team to build up a lead over the other. Then there are games that change in a minute, the last minute to be more specific.
Andover scored the first touchdown of the game early in the first quarter. Then to close out the first half, David Kemp kicked a 49 yard field goal to give the Trojans a 10 to 0 lead.
For most of the game, Great Bend’s offense could not sustain a drive. Their defense, on the other hand, held Andover’s offense mostly in check. They forced three turnovers, that the offense could not capitalize on.
With under three minutes to go in the game, the Panthers had three cracks at scoring a touchdown from one yard out. They could not get across the goal line. Andover celebrated their successful goal line stand.
The Trojans took over the ball on their one yard line. Great Bend’s defense held them to only a few yards of gain. Forced to punt from the end zone, Andover’s punter, quarterback Eli Fahnestock, saw his punt get blocked. In the scramble after the block, Fahnestock knocked the ball out the back of the end zone. This gave Great Bend a Safety and two points.
The Panthers now had 54 seconds and 50 yards to get eight more points to tie up the game. Their first three plays only netted six yards. On the fourth down, quarterback Dalton Miller heaved a Hail Mary pass to the end zone and receiver Alex Schremmer. Schremmer caught the ball and scored the touchdown as time expired for the game. They quickly converted the two point conversion to tie the game at 10 points all.
In overtime, Andover had the ball first, but they were unable to score. They attempted a field goal from about 26 yards out, but it barely missed.
Great Bend took the ball but were forced to attempt a field goal. Their kicker, Angel Razo, never attempted a field goal or even a point after touchdown in a game before. He stepped up and made the 29 yard field goal to win the game.
Afterwards fans dubbed the game the “Miracle on Morton.” Needless to say, it made for an exciting end to the first game of the season.

The Garden City Buffaloes made the familiar trip to Memorial Stadium to face the Great Bend Panthers.
A win would hand the Western Athletic Conference title to the Panthers. A loss would mean just a share of the title along with two other fellow conference schools.
Great Bend quickly let it be known that they wanted the trophy all to themselves. The Panthers scored about three minutes into the game. On the next Garden City snap, Dalton Miller would strip the ball away from the Buffalo and take it in for six more points.
The Great Bend Panthers went on to win the game by a score of 49 to 6.

Rivalries give football games added flavor. Two teams that square off with each other so often that the meetings take on special meaning. The Hays Indians traveled to face the Great Bend Panthers on the gridiron for the 81st time on September 7th.
The game started with a back and forth defensive battle. Both teams faced a second down and 22 yards to go on their opening possessions.
Late in the first half, Great Bend intercepted a pass from the Hays quarterback and on the ensuing possession, scored the first touchdown of the game. The Panthers failed to make the point after touchdown kick. A couple of minutes later, Hays used a busted pass play to get on the board themselves and take a 7 to 6 lead into halftime.
Great Bend added another touchdown and a field goal to clinch the victory with a score of 15 to 7.

With one week until the start of high school football, everyone needs some practice to be ready for the season.
The Great Bend Panthers hosted their Red & Black Scrimmage to give the team a more game-like practice. Fans took the opportunity to scope out the best seats to view the action. Even some members of the local media used the evening as a chance to knock off some of the rust.
While everyone might not be one hundred percent ready for the kickoff of the season next week, they are that much closer to being there.
Below are some of the pictures I took at the game:

On the night of Winter Homecoming, the Great Bend Panthers welcomed the Buhler Crusaders to the Field House.
The victors jumped out to a 12 point lead late in the first quarter. Then Great Bend began chipping away to narrow it to four by halftime. The second half saw a back and forth, physical battle between the two teams. It even saw one player leave his shoe on the other end of the court at one point. By the end of the game, the Crusaders stood on top with a final score of 44 to 36.
