2-1A State Baseball Championship Bluestem vs Ellis 5-26-17

A beautiful evening made a great setting for the final game in the 2017 Class 2-1A Baseball season as the Bluestem Lions and Ellis Railroaders faced off in the State Championship game.

This year’s game came with an added twist as a pitcher could not throw more than 105 pitches in a game. Along with the pitch count limit came a required rest period. With the State Tournament only lasting a total of two days, once a player hit the max limit, they were no longer available in that position. Both teams hoped their pitchers would go as long as possible.

Bluestem opened the scoring in the first frame with one run in the top of the first. Ellis came right back in the bottom half of the inning and plated two runs. The Railroaders added one more in the second inning and two more in the third.

Then in the fourth inning, the Bluestem bats woke back up as they manufactured two runs. The next winning they tacked three more runs and chased away the Ellis starting pitcher Brevin LaBarge.

Adding two more runs in the top of the sixth inning sealed the Lions’ victory. Their starting pitcher, Blake Bevan, went all the way to the final inning and faced all but the final four batters.

Bluestem finishes the year with the State Championship and a 17 and 4 record. Ellis finished the runner-up with the State Championship game serving as their only loss after 19 victories.

5A Sub-State Goddard Football versus Great Bend 11-18-16

Tonight, only four teams in the State of Kansas in Class 5A stepped out onto a field of play. The Goddard Lions traveled to face the Great Bend Panthers for a chance to play for the State Championship.

The Lions struck quickly scoring on their first possession. They dominated the game from there on. When Great Bend managed to put points on the board, Goddard punched right back. By the end of the night, the scoreboard read 50 to 21 and the Lions gathered to celebrate their win and the opportunity to play for the State title.

Goddard faces off against Mill Valley next Saturday. Great Bend ends their season with a 10 and 2 record.

Lyons Football versus Hoisington 10-27-16

The Ninth and final week of the regular season for football brought a lesson in things that are bigger than the game itself.

For a second year, the Lyons Lions and the Hoisington Cardinals faced off with heavy hearts. Last year, Lyons lost a player in a tragic fire. This year, a Hoisington player and his manager brother lost their father just days before the match up.

The Cardinals took control of the game from the start and did not let go until the final moments when Lyons recorded their first points. A 62 to 3 final score stood on the scoreboard, but a bigger gesture commanded notice.

As the teams filed past and shook hands, Lyons players would give an extra moment to #60 Jeremy Breit. They would express condolences and give encouragement, remembering their own grief and sadness from a year earlier.

Then both teams met up and joined hands in prayer. Just minutes earlier they fought each other, now they kneeled united as teammates and brothers to comfort someone in need.
