Cheyenne Bottoms August 4th

I took some time on the evening of August 4th to go out and see the birds at Cheyenne Bottoms.

The trip also gave me the opportunity to try Canon’s EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens that I am renting for the weekend. I can see why many people love this lens. It delivers a fast focusing, high quality picture with an easy to carry and use weight. Many shooters consider it a great lens to use for birds in flight pictures. I will test that out Saturday as I use it to track some fast-moving birds west of Salina.

(Yes, there will be pictures posted here.)

Speaking of pictures, here are some of the ones I took this evening:

Gray Day at Cheyenne Bottoms

I took a short spin through Cheyenne Bottoms after work today. It was a cold and gray day there.

The drought in Kansas is really starting to take hold. Many of the ponds and pools at the Bottoms are getting very low if not dry altogether.

Between the dry conditions and the cold windy day, not too many birds were around.

Here are a few of the pics (and birds I found) I took:

Spring Afternoon at Cheyenne Bottoms

Saturday, April 30, I took a stroll through Cheyenne Bottoms. Beforehand, I joined other fellow members of the Central Kansas Photography Club in assisting with a photography class taught by Bob Gress (Bio).

After the class some of us decided to see which birds had stopped over in the large wetlands.

Below are some of the pictures I took that day.

Ducks at Cheyenne Bottoms

I was glad to grab the camera today and head out to Cheyenne Bottoms. While I only spent about an hour there, I was able to find some ducks in a few of the pools around the refuge.

It was nice to press the shutter again.

Here are some of the pictures I took this afternoon.

Quivira NWR December 30th

I went out to Quivira National Wildlife Refuge the morning of December 30, 2010.  My main hope that day was to see some Bald Eagles, which I did, but I also saw some other birds.

Here are my pics from that morning:

Whooping Cranes at Quivira NWR

Two Whooping Cranes stopped over at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge on their way to Texas last week.

I took the opportunity Saturday afternoon to take my camera down and try to shoot some pictures of them.  Thanks to the help of a birdwatcher with a big sighting scope, I was directed to where they stood.

My 70-200mm lens did what it could, but I really could have used a longer piece of glass to take a better shot of these rare birds.

Maybe one of these days I’ll start taking up a collection for new camera gear.

After seeing the Whooping Cranes on the Little Salt Marsh, I went up to the Wildlife Drive at the Big Salt Marsh and took pictures of some great shore birds and beached carp.  Yes, beached carp.  It was quite the sight.

Little did I know that at that same time, 12 more Whooping Cranes were flying in.

Hmmm, might need to start collecting for that camera gear fund sooner than I thought.

Here are my pics from an afternoon at Quivira NWR:

Cheyenne Bottoms October 17

I took my camera out to Cheyenne Bottoms Sunday afternoon.

I didn’t spend a long time out there, but you could already see the start of the migrating birds arriving.  More ducks and geese have taken up temporary residence.

Here are some of the pics I took:

Cheyenne Bottoms in Early Fall

I headed out to Cheyenne Bottoms again on a late September evening.

The weather was absolutely beautiful.  The mosquitoes were thick as paste.

I did find some nice pics of herons and pelicans still nesting there.  A few geese were around also.

The big migratory flocks are still far to the north.

Here’s some of the pics I took that evening:

Labor Day at Cheyenne Bottoms

I took my camera out to Cheyenne Bottoms Labor Day afternoon.  I dealt with a stiff north wind that day.  I like that the wind caused some pelicans to fly over and allow me the closest picture of them I’ve gotten so far
